Three numbers decide when you will be debt free: your balance, your APR, and your monthly payment. Change any one of them and the date moves.
The calculator below works in both directions: tell it your payment and it gives you the date, or tell it the date and it gives you the payment.
What you’ll learn
- Your exact debt-free date
- Total interest and total paid
- The payment needed for a target date
- What an extra $100 a month changes
- How to make the projected date real

Here is the landscape at 24% APR, across common balances and payments:
| Balance | $150/mo | $300/mo | $500/mo | $750/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | 2 yr 2 mo | 1 yr | 7 mo | 5 mo |
| $6,500 | 8 yr 6 mo | 2 yr 5 mo | 1 yr 4 mo | 10 mo |
| $10,000 | Never | 4 yr 8 mo | 2 yr 2 mo | 1 yr 4 mo |
| $15,000 | Never | Never | 3 yr 11 mo | 2 yr 2 mo |
The “Never” cells are not typos. When the payment does not exceed the monthly interest charge, the balance never shrinks. That cliff is why the first hundred dollars above the interest line matter more than any other hundred dollars in the whole payoff.
Ways to speed it up
1.Add a fixed extra amount
Every dollar above the interest charge goes straight to principal. The simulator above shows exactly what your extra $50 or $100 buys.
2.Freeze the card
New charges quietly cancel your payments. The projected date assumes the balance only moves down.
3.Send windfalls at the balance
A tax refund or bonus applied to principal can move your date up by months in a single day.
4.Attack the APR
A rate-reduction call to your issuer or a 0% balance transfer makes every payment count for more.
